CECIL WAYNE 'CEC' OLMSTEAD
August 1, 1939-February 9, 2008
Cec, a longtime Port Angeles-area resident, died of a cerebral hemorrhage at his home.
He was the son of Alburn T. and Justena (Schneller) Olmstead.
Cec was born in Dennison, Iowa. He grew up on Mount Pleasant Road and went to Mount Pleasant School, Roosevelt and Port Angeles High School, where he lettered in football and graduated in 1957.
He joined the Army in August 1958 and served as a Private E-3 until December 1962.
During that time he received Badges of Distinction in Conduct, Mechanics and Marksmanship. He was deployed overseas in Germany, a country he loved.
He retired as a heavy equipment operator for the Olympic National Park service.
His marriage to Karen J. Schoenfeldt in 1967, ended in divorce in 1990.
He later was widowed in his second marriage to Linda Day, who died in 1995.
In August 2007, the Olmstead family gathered together for his last family reunion.
In his latter years of life, Cec most enjoyed spending time with his lifelong friend, Karen Schoenfeldt, and their children or socializing at the Senior Center and McDonald's over coffee.
Cec could be seen on his property riding his lawn mower, tinkering on his tractors or at the pond feeding his beloved ducks.
He is survived by his former wife and friend, Karen Schoenfeldt; son, Wayne Thomas Olmstead of California; daughter, Justina Jo Olmstead, and grandson, Richard Olmstead, of Port Angeles; sisters, Ella Phinn of Bremerton, Lois Cargile of Port Angeles and Marvel Gray of Port Orchard; brothers, Edward Olmstead of Grapeview and Donald Olmstead of Port Angeles; nieces, Helen Barley, Conni Authier and Deanna Chapman, all of Port Angeles, Angela Summers and Roxianne Phinn of Bremerton and Kristine Pitts of Grapeview; and nephews, Michael and Thomas Lynch and Nathan Chapman of Port Angeles and Robert Gray Jr. of Port Orchard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Day, and nephew, Edward Olmstead Jr.
Extended family is in Denison and Dow City, Iowa.
Services were held February 23, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Mount Angeles Memorial Park with Military Honors
